Lost? - Stay put!

It's just been announced that James Kim, the CNET editor who disappeared with his family last week on their way to Oregon, has been found dead.  Now there's a big surprise.  The MSNBC headline says "Tragic Ending."  Tragic my ass!  Stupid is more like it.  Look, I feel bad for the guy and all, but seriously, his death was just plain stupid. I learned when I was freaking 2 that if I got lost, I was just supposed to stay put until help arrived.  The formula is simple.  Lost? - Stay Put! This is doubly true in Kim's situation.  I mean, it's not like he was out hiking the Swiss Alps.  He freaking DROVE to where he got lost.  How long could it possibly take before they were found?  In fact, his wife and kids were found alive, a few days ago, and barely required any medical attention.  They were fine.  A little hungry, maybe, but a little warm milk, and they were on their way. On top of that, they had ample water in the snow around them, and they had a CAR, which last I checked, is the best shelter one can ask for in these situations.  They ran the motor for heat until they ran out of gas.  Then they burned the tires.  What, no wood around anywhere?  The only thing they were lacking was food, which is what James should have been out trying to find. No don't get me wrong, I'm not happy the guys dead.  And I feel just horrible for his family.  I can't even begin to imagine what they are going through.  But everyone seems to be making this guy out as some kind of martyr here.
A tearful Undersheriff Brian Anderson announced the discovery of the body, his voice breaking at one point.
But he's not a martyr.  He was stupid.  Instead of crying, the Undersherriff ought to be taking this opportunity to educate people.  If you get lost, do what you were taught when you were 2.  Do not move until help arrives.
