I came home for lunch today, and was lucky enough to catch a live feed of Senators John McCain and Barack Obama jointly visiting Ground Zero today, the 7th anniversary of the September 11th attacks. No speeches. No politics. Just two Presidential Candidates meeting with survivors, consoling the grieving, paying their respects.
I'm not ashamed to say that I teared up again as they walked down the long walkway leading into the pit where those buildings used to stand.
The campaigns agreed to a cease-fire of sorts today. No ads. No press. Just respect for what happened 7 years ago today. Watching them hug as they parted ways at the end made me proud to be an American.
I still remember waking up to the news 7 years, and the anger and pain I felt that morning, and in the mornings that followed. I'll never forget watching those buildings burn. The visions of the people who jumped rather than be burned alive will haunt me forever. The bravery of those who died trying to save others will forever inspire me.
Some might see these yearly memorials as sappy. I sure hope not many. I, for one, am still angry. It still pains me. I truly hope that we never forget. I know I never will.
God Bless America.
